The purpose of language
The purpose of language is communication. Until is used for communicating, it is not language but only parroting; yet many of the textbooks written by some of America’s most reputable linguists make little or on provision for communication. There are manipulative exercises galore, but the student is never allowed to have an idea he wishes to convey , to find whthin himself the necessary words and the grammatical devices, and to express his thought.
Occasionally,at the end of a lesson,there is a suggestion such : The ingenious will know how to provide opportunities for his students to use in a conversational situation the constructions already learned. Needless to say, this amounts to abandoning the teacher precisely at the moment he most needs help. The most significant trend, then, in methods of teaching English as a second language may well prove to be the attempt to assign to communication its proper role in the classroom. This trend is not one of the sensational new developments, but it has given rise in the last year or two to the production of small numbers of effective textbooks for use at various levels of instruction.

Although we have made considerable progress in the linguistic understanding of problems in learning a foreign language, we know very little of the psychology (emotionai,process,order, memory) of learning.Teaching methods have been largely the collected practice and teaching habits of particular teachers who reacted to the memory of their own experience in learning, the example of their own teachers, and the fashion which seemed prevalent or attractive in the history of language teaching. It would be interesting and profitable to analyse the psychology of language learning underlying each of the more widely known methods , regardless of whether or not its author ever consciously worked out the psychology of language learning underlying his views. In the grammar-translation method, for example, the assumption is that the student learns by memorizing rules of correct grammar and by translation from one language to the other. This learning assumption is woefully incomplete; that is,it says nothing specifically about how the student learns anything in particular.Regardless of method, we need to know the elements to be learned,in order in which they are learned, and other matters of importance such as age and level of knowledge.

How to teach?We know
Teaching material
All our teachihg produces one of two major outcomes .Either we make our students more sponge-minded, more uncritical,more willing to accept unquestioningly what a writer or speaker says; or we make our students more critical-minded,more thoughtful ,and less willing to accept something merely on another person’s statement or opinion.There are seven standards for evaluating all teaching material with a view to promoting good teaching:
1- Do teaching materials make those who use them critical-minded?
2- Audio-visual materials should give us a true picture of the ideas which they preset ?
3-Does the material contribute meaningful content to the tobic under study?
4- Is the material appropriate for the age, intelligence, and experience of the learnrs?
5- Is the material used worth the time,expense, and offort involved?
6- Is the physical quality of the audio-visual materials satisfactory?
7- Is there a teachers’ guide available to provide help in effective use of audio-visual materials?
While the teacher should preview the material he or she shows to the class, this is not always possible. But a study of the guide will give detailed understanding of the silde, filmstrip, or film content, and also offer some appropriate teaching suggestions.
